I know this is a odd question. I work for a company that does late night computer repair. Some people ask me to take my shoes off others do not. What I found odd is how many home I go into where the kids are wearing shoes, sometimes late at night. I have seen this with all races (except asain and middle eastern) but is more common with hispanic people. One mom told her son who was about 7 to tie his shoe. This was around 8 at night. I was like why doesn't she just tell him to take them off. Another parent put a shoe back on her 3 year old after she took it off. This was around 7 at night. It just seems odd to me. Im just thinking how sweaty their litle feet must be being in shoes all day! Wouldn't slippers make more sense oe just let them go barefoot?
Do some parents really made their kids wear shoes in the house and why?
It could be because of the colder weather or because they feel they need to put shoes on since a repairman is coming over. You should see if the same holds true when you visit friends, neighbors or family members in their houses. I bet these people are more relax and not wearing their shoes because they know you better.
My family rarely wears shoes in the house unless we are having a formal party. In summer we are usually just in bare feet, and in winter in socks or slippers. Wearing shoes inside make for a dirty home.
I think the main factors that influence wearing shoes in the home are the following:
1. Climate
2. Location of home (country, suburb or city)
3. Weather
4. Cultural upbringing
5. Cleanliness of home and concerns to keep home clean
Kids really need to go barefoot for a portion of each day since it helps in the development of proper balance and muscle development in their feet.
Reply:Well I *made* my boys take off outdoor shoes at the door - and then they could wear slippers or pumps if needs be - stockinged feet upstairs but never barefoot except in bed (stockinged feet can slip on lino which is why I insisted on pumps or slippers in the kichen).
But each to their own I suppose.
Reply:I do because we have floors throughout the house and are in and out most of the day. If their feet are uncomfortable I will let them take them off. However as a general rule the shoes come on when they wake up and come off when it is time for bed. The kids really look better when they are wearing shoes and socks. I know a lady who's kid lost a toe do to a injury in the house. Plus putting shoes back on with dirty socks is what makes the shoes stink.
BTW my kids feet only sweat when they walk around allot.
Reply:yeah
my friend's mom is like that
she says
1. static electricity (WEIRD!)
2. she says their feet will get dirty
i really have no idea why bc what she said is like freaky..
Reply:My husband was raised in a home that wanted something on the feet (shoes or slippers). It was because his father was a fireman and he always wanted them prepared to leave in case of fire or evacuation. Our kids have slippers that stay at Grandma and Grandpa's house for this purpose.
Reply:erm, why is it weird? i wear shoes at home...my slippers get worn out too easy....and i'm asian
Reply:I can honestly say that I now do not wear shoes in my own home, but that is largely due to the fact that I married an Asian man. It makes more sense to me to take your shoes off, that way the floor stays clean. But growing up... we never took our shoes off. And as hard as I try... I can't remember at what point in the day I would actually take them off?? Clearly sometime before bed... but I honestly don't remember? It's so wierd... but it seems like I've been taking my shoes off when I enter the house forever?
At any rate... to answer your question... yes, it seems wierd to require shoes in the house? I guess if she is sick of dirty socks because everyone else tracks dirt onto the floors (especially if they have tile or hardwood), then maybe not so wierd, but in that case... it seems easier to just not allow shoes in the house to keep the floors clean.
Who knows?
Reply:yeah my mother in law makes my daughter where shoes in her house. She has three dogs, and a few cats. The floors are not all carpet. But they seem to be clean. This woman is a tiny, frail looking woman. She is always cold, even in the summer time in Virginia, she wears pants and long sleeves. She thinks the kids feet will get cold, or dirty. I never used to put socks on my daughter or son, and no matter what, she would always send my kids home with socks on, and normally she'd have the kids wearing shoes inside. I think she thought that they'd get worms or some kind of parasite inside. I think she suffers from Obessive Compulsive disorder. But who knows, i guess mothers in laws and daughter in laws are going to disagree. We live in hawaii now, and so you have to take off your shoes before you go into a home. I only wear tennis shoes inside if I know i'm going to be on my feet a lot cooking or cleaning, bc my ankles and feet will hurt more. My husband used to wear socks all the time, but he doesn't now that he's moved out of his mommas! lol. But I do know that she's good for buying socks, and shoes for the kids, lol. that's terrible I know, but it's true, of course if she were to hear it out of my mouth, it'd never happen.
Reply:Most people I know keep their shoes on indoors too, even when they aren't going out again. But I don't know anyone who's so strict about keeping shoes on their kids if they want to take them off; even when they have to leave again, they just put the shoes back on when they have to go out. I guess some people are just afraid of stepping on stuff but really it's quite good for kids to go barefoot (or for adults for that matter, it's not good to keep feet cooped up in closed shoes all day at all). Ah well, to each their own.
There's no risk in case of fire, it never gets so cold here that you'll get frostbite in the time it'll take to get to a neighbors' place down the street. I'm a bit scared of fire too since we had a house fire many years ago, but it still seems a bit silly to me to keep shoes on all day just because of that; wonder if they slept in their clothes too, and what about wearing a coat? :-) I've been barefoot for almost eleven years, indoors and outdoors, unless it's *much* below freezing and you're way out in the middle of nowhere it's not going to hurt to run out of the house barefoot, less so than having to run out in pj's or anything like that.
Reply:i hate that! to the people who say their feet will get dirty first off, you are making your floor so much more dirty by wearing shoes that you wear in parking lots and public restrooms all over your house! then you probably get down and roll around on the floor with your kids! EW!
try some house slippers. no dirty feet or socks and your not tracking outside dirt and germs inside, and feet are protected from being cold, or stepping on staples or glass and things.
it's not a rule that shoes come off in my house, but my kids and i take them off as soon as we come in the door and so do most my guests. but unless you're shoes are covered in mud i don't make people.
