Do you consider horse racing evil (for PETA members)?

I have been looking at PETA sites and found that they are completely against horse racing. I work on a thoroughbred farm where they are bred and raised for racing. These horses are treated better than I am, which is saying a lot. When they are injured, they are given every chance necessary for treatment. During two years of working there, I have only seen two horses die; one from colic (which had absolutely nothing to do with racing) and another from a severe case of founder caused by a injury from a shoe (which could have happened to any horse with a loose shoe).

The horses at this farm are not sent off to auction, even if they are lame for life. They are given away to responsible owners. I have never heard of an owner selling their horses to meat companies since I have worked there. My question is, do you think horse racing is evil even though most horses are treated like kings?

It's such a relief to find a question that is not putting down horse racing for once. I find that people who are constantly putting down horse racing tend to be uneducated on the subject and should really learn a few things before they open their mouths and answer. Racehorses live better than most people do! They are horse royalty and at least most of them, love their jobs. And like you said, if they don't like racing, nine times out of ten they're taken off of the track. And as for racing two-year-olds, most people I know don't overace the young ones. Yes, a two-year-old is obviously still young, but horses are made to run. Running in a race, especially with proper training, is not going to kill them. Thoroughbreds are known for their love of running. My mare is a Quarter Horse with strong Thoroughbred influence and she loves nothing more than to run at top speeds.

I am obviously not a PETA member, and I never will be. I once read a story on who PETA was trying to put a man away for leaving his huskys outside during winter. The dogs were chained within sight of each other, but not so they'd be able to reach each other (to reduce fights) and each dog had a dog house. Huskys are breed to survive in the harshest climates. They are extremely uncomfortable being inside a warm house. It doesn't surprise me that they're jumping all over horse racing too. Thanks again for posting a question that is not putting down horse racing.
Reply:Not at all,

From what i understand the horses are loved up to death! They are doing what they love, and thats to run!

Also, they only put them down if something horrible happens like they shatter their legs, which a horse can never recupperate from.
Reply:i do not think that horse racing is evil.

however i do believe that sometimes it can get a little bit too competitive and some horses are pushed too hard, way past their natural limits.

this is not all horse farms. but some.
Reply:of course not a lot of people enjoy horse racing
Reply:Yes! It does not matter if they are pampered, they are being used against their will and forced in to (which in my beliefs is) a form of slavery. Why should they be used for gambling and forced to run endlessly so that humans may gain money? Most people would agree that it does not matter if the horses are treated like kings, they are wild animals and should be free to run as they please.
Reply:Yes! These horses are only two years old and their joints are not fully develop. Imagine sending your two year old out to run the 5K. Doesn't make since, now does it:-/
Reply:All you need is one example of a horse trainer ditching a horse on the side of the road to have this happen.

Plus, we see horse auctions in general, where many are sent off to the knackers.

I assume in the larger sense is that horses become injured and have to be put down, so if they were not racing, these calibers of accidents would not occur.

Certainly, this is the case in greyhound racing.

Now, I am not a member of PETA, but, as a member of the public, I can at least explain how this extrapolation can happen
Reply:I don't think horse racing is evil I think the PETA members are EVIL to humans. I have written them a few times, b/c I feel they value animal rights before humans...
Reply:You know, regardless of who you are I have found out that you will always piss someone off, so if you feel ok working there then do it and if you don't, then don't.
Reply:this is just like the one time a rodeo guy got on me for hunter jumping. he said "people who jump and beat their horses over the fences. jumpers abuse their horse." it all depends on the person and the horse. i don't use a crop on my horses so how would i beat them over the fence? if the horse has the heart for it and wants to do then no it is not cruel, if they are forced to run then yes it is cruel. the two horses i currently jump were old race horses Tommy ,6, hurt his knee and got pulled off now he is a great hunter jumper and loves jumping he still loves to act like a race horse and he loves to go out with other horses and run. willow was abused because her owners stopped paying for her and was walking dead we took her and now she is better and loves to race with Tommy out in the Fields and she takes off with me sometimes too. but it all depends on the horses heart and no one laugh at what I'm gonna say next look at Barbour Assault Desert Stormer and seabiscuit. they loved to run as i said before it depends on the horses heart and what it loves to do. also people who run track is that cruel it is mainly the same thing. but see someone would conter my answer saying they can chose to do it, no they do it because they love it if they didn't they would stop just like a horse would stop doing somthing if it didn't like it
Reply:Are you crazy! people treat horses great by exercising them by running/racing...think about the indians and what they used them for like MEAT
Reply:PETA thinks owning any animal for any reason is evil. If they get their way, no one will own an animal at all. That is the ultimate goal. It is not to help with the welfare of animals in shelters etc. It is to stop it all. Check out the statistics concerning how much money PETA brings in every year, vs. how much is given to shelters or non profit animal welfare clubs. It's almost nothing. Check out the affiliates of PETA, (one of the groups they give millions to) that has been declared a terrorist organization by the government because of the damage/injuries etc inflicted by bombing entire research complexes and so on. How bout all the animals that die in the explosions? How about the people?

My answer is no. I don't think racing horses is evil. Animals were put on earth to serve man in many capacities, be it food, companionship or what ever we choose to use them for. They should be treated humanely because we are responsible for their welfare when we decide to keep one, and they are innocents that we make dependent on us, not because they are little humans.
Reply:I am not a PETA member, but know horse racing just like dog racing is wrong. It is a form of slavery. It doesn't matter how well they're treated before and after a race. They are being forced to race! That is wrong. How would you like it if someone forced you to race when you didn't want to?Just b/c they can't speak your laungue is no reason to think that you should be able to control them!!
Reply:No its the same as riding a horse only theres other people riding too to get the money so nesscarilly no its not...
Reply:no, i have 2 horses, one used to race, but then he retired and my parents bought him for me. the other i've had since he was born (on reserve). the horses that do it are used to it and learn to either love it or deal with it. i understand many of them die after they retire but there are many instances when they live on.
