Why the EXTREME pride in one's own country, race, or color?

This question will surely anger a lot of people, but I am only asking it because I have wondered it many times myself. See, we do not choose our race, skin color, parents, or where we are born...I understand having pride in your country or race, I am an American but I don't feel "better, stronger, or more powerful" than others.I don't understand putting down others of a different origin or race. You could be in their shoes just as easily as they could be in yours.....it just so happens that your parents had you and their parents had them...Think about that the next time you put someone down for uneducated or ridiculous reasons such as race, color, or origin....xxxxturtlegirl

Wow I am glad you have wrote what you wrote. I am surprised there have not been some really crazed people on here telling you why they are the "chosen" ones. We are all humans and we dont choose any thing we are just born after that we can make some choices but not on our race, etc as you said. Thanks for stating this! KUDOS TO U TURTLEGIRL!

Really, I think all this goes back to the tribe mentality, that appears to be genetic. Kill everything that's different from you, and help everything similar. It's a good strategy for advancing genes I suppose, for those who choose to be ruled by their genes.
Reply:Completely understand where you're coming from. I am not an American. Do Americans feel like it's them against the world? I feel fortunate to be born into a great country where I am not being bombed, tortured, starved or ignored. I am not about to freak out on other cultures who may not have had the advantages that I take for granted everyday.


Not to say that all Americans do this or that Canadians do not.

Bill Hicks summed it up well for me when he said "It was a round world last time a checked". People's pride in their roots can be a positive force or a negative force. The basic cause of our need to identify with our kin is that as a herd animal we need other people to help us feel secure and we can only feel secure with people that do not challenge us on any level.
Reply:You know, there is an episode from the original "Star Trek" TV show where two races of people were fighting each other. One race had white skin on the left side of their faces, with black skin on the right side. It was just the opposite with the other race, with white on the right, and black on the left. The leaders of the Enterprise are told by one man that it should be obvious which race is superior, but all he gets as a reaction is a confused look. I actually think we do choose our parents, but all children of God are children of promise, and we are all of equal worth in the sight of God, or He would not have allowed His Son Jesus Christ to make the sacrifice of the Atonement that applies to EVERYONE whether they are Christian or not. I think it's just hard to think on a universal level for most people.

Reply:People have pride of their own race for the same reason they have pride in the state they are from, hobbies and job they have; all humans want to be unique and express themselves
Reply:only a certain ammount of people have EXTREME pride, but in every culture and races or creed, there will always be some stupid idiot who thinks that they are the best in the whole world..i think it boils down to ignorance...





but on a mediocre level, having pride in ones own country, race, color is a normal human trait it is the basis for brotherhood, nationalism, and such collective groups...like maybee the pople of Philosophy thinks that they are btter than the people of Religion, which is kinda true...but add EXTREME to it, they will probably start bombing us and stoning us to extinction.
